Planned, coordinated, directed and supervised all activities of the Horticulture Department in caring for the park system’s horticulture plantings and programs. Planned and supervised activities related to park beautification projects, formal gardens and casual seasonal plantings. Promoted public interest in the study and appreciation of horticulture, the natural environment and the park system role in natural sciences and ecology through horticulture. Served as Horticulture Department Head, Director of the Leonard J. Buck Garden, Director of the Colonial Park Arboretum and Rose Garden. Delegated authority to staff within the department. Worked under the general supervision of the Administrator of the Division of Natural Resources in close cooperation with all other park departments.
Accomplishments include the preparation of written Standards of Horticultural Maintenance and Annual Maintenance Calendar, initiating development of Horticulture Department and multiple site master plans, construction of the Lilac Garden Wedding Gazebo, planning for construction of maintenance buildings at both Colonial Park and the Buck Garden, standardized plant records and data. Developed and expanded Horticulture program activities, participated in development of the Friends of Horticulture Member’s Day at Buck Garden, developed Rose Day Preview, developed Herb Day. Acquired the F. Gordon Foster Hardy Fern Collection. Developed promotional brochures: “Where Beauty Grows”, garden guides for the Rose Garden, Fragrance and Sensory Garden, Buck Garden, and the Foster Hardy Fern Collection. Coordinated development of the New Jersey Garden Directory Project.
